Praise for Volunteers at 9 RLC by the CO

Lt Col Symonds, the Commanding Officer of 9 Reg RLC, presented certificates to Lindsay Marshall and Emma Lane at a community session at Buckley Barracks last week. This was in recognition of one years volunteering service with AWS.

Both Lindsay and Emma have been involved in setting up and running the Buckley Barracks Jnr Youth Club, which opened in April 2015. With their help the club has grown in size and now has a thriving membership.

Our thanks go to both Lindsay and Emma, and all of our volunteers, who help provide young people with personal and social development opportunities throughout the year.

Improving Care & Treatment For Serving Personnel, Veterans And Families - New E-learning Programme

Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare, with support from NHS England, has launched an e-learning programme to help increase understanding of the armed forces population and facilitate improved care and treatment.
The programme covers current serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Whilst many aspects of health need are the same as the general public, there are sometimes significant differences, particularly in relation to conditions attributable to service life and the impact upon families. These differences can be reflected in the way in which healthcare is delivered, the range and types of services provided and the long-term impact upon patients and families.

Rio 2016 Olympics Ticket Fraud

The Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro begin on 6th August 2016 and as of late June, you will be able to purchase tickets from the Rio 2016 ticket offices.  Purchasing from an unauthorised seller or a ticket tout could leave you out of pocket; not only are the tickets advertised at inflated prices, but there is also a risk that the tickets purchased are counterfeit or do not exist. Any individual with a counterfeit ticket will be refused entry.

To help protect yourself, the list of authorised sellers has been published on the official website and provides a list of trusted resellers; this can be found at
. Equally, tickets purchased that are no longer needed can be sold through the Rio 2016 website for a 100% reimbursement of the amount paid if the tickets are resold.

Protect yourself

  • When purchasing from another company or individual, ask questions; specifically when you will receive the ticket and what type of ticket you are purchasing.
  • Pay for tickets by using a credit card or trusted payment service. Payments made by bank transfer may not be recoverable.
  • Always check that the payment screen is secure by looking for the padlock symbol or making sure the website/url begins with “https”.
  • If you have been affected by this, or any other scam, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040, or

South West veterans Mental Health Services

The service is hosted by the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Trust but provides help to military veterans across the whole of the South West of England. Our staff have a wealth of experience in mental health and are appropriately trained to provide an efficient and effective service to veterans in the South West.  The clinicians in our team all have experience of working in military settings as serving or civilian personnel and so have a particular understanding of the issues veterans face.
The definition of veterans as used by services such as this is someone that has served in the armed forces for at least a day, therefore the service is accessible by anyone who has served in the forces
With the South West hosting approximately 42,000 serving service personnel and a high number of veterans, support of this kind is clearly needed.
We encourage veterans and their families to recognise the signs of problems looming, understand the issues that influence this and help them find the expert support that they need. We are doing this by setting up a network of contact points around the South West, including mental health trusts, charities and other related organisations.
One of the key tools of the new service is the, which offers advice, guidance, links, comments from other veterans and a helpline number allowing veterans or their families to self-refer to support services.

Carillionamey: Service Families Accommodation - Patch Management

Improving the way we manage your patch

As part of the improvement plan, CarillionAmey have rolled out a new initiative which we are hoping will assist with better communication. Each Accommodation Officer (AO) is responsible for making regular checks on the Service Family homes and the surrounding communal areas for which they are responsible.
They conduct regular inspections looking out for things such as graffiti, fallen trees, and potholes in roads. During their walk-around they also take a look at the exterior of properties, and may often notice things that families miss, such as a leaking drainpipe or blocked guttering and should alert the occupants so that a job can be raised.

Nowadays with so many families where both partners work, sometimes issues are identified when no one is home, and although the AO will raise the job with the Helpdesk, families may only find out about it when an engineer arrives to complete the job. We recognise that may be a concern for some families so CarillionAmey’s new patch management inspection card aims to solve this problem. Once the AO has identified an issue with the exterior of a property, the details will be completed on the card and posted through the letterbox, helping to prevent small repairs becoming bigger ones.

Here is a reminder of what CarillionAmey are responsible for within your patch:

National Citizen Service For 16 & 17 Year Olds

National Citizen Service (NCS) is open to all 16 and 17-year-olds in England.
It helps you build your skills for work and life, while you take on new challenges and meet new friends.
It runs in the spring, summer and autumn. You’ll have a short time away from home and take part in a team project that will help your community.
NCS brings together young people from different backgrounds and helps them develop greater confidence, self-awareness and responsibility. It encourages personal and social development by working on skills like leadership, teamwork and communication.
Participants develop a social action project to deal with a local issue they’re passionate about, and spend 30 hours putting the project into action in their community.
If you’re 16 or 17, you can take part in NCS.
Visit the NCSyes site and sign up to receive more information and details of how to get involved.
